Although oxygen is essential for the survival of human beings, it can also be the cause of great damage to our bodies. The oxidation of free radicals can result in the destruction of cell membranes, which can increase the body’s vulnerability to many different kinds of diseases.

One of the most effective ways to neutralize free radicals is to consume foods that are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent free radicals from damaging the cells in our bodies. When antioxidants are introduced into the body, they act as oxidation targets for free radicals. With the presence of these new targets, the free radicals no longer have to steal oxygen atoms from our cell membranes to fulfill their need to oxidize.

Antioxidants are able to give away or accept electrons without doing any harm to our bodies, and they can keep free radicals from destroying our cells to give us optimum health.

Free radicals can contribute to the development of about sixty different types of diseases. While they can cause milder illnesses such the flu and infections, they can also contribute to occurrences of life-threatening health risks such as heart disease and cancer.

Free radicals can also damage the nerve cells of our brains and cause mental health disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Therefore, by controlling the oxidation activities of free radicals, antioxidants are actually performing essential work that can be life-saving. In addition, antioxidants may be effective in slowing down the aging of our cells and bodies.

There are a lot of fruits and vegetables that contain high levels of antioxidants, and these include berries, pink grapefruits, oranges, peaches, apricots, papayas, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, red peppers, tomatoes, and carrots. There are also supplements that you can take to boost the level of antioxidants in your body.

To ensure that the free radicals in your body are under control, include foods that contain antioxidants in your daily diet.

Every day, our bodies are exposed to toxins that are detrimental to our health. Some of these toxins are free radicals.

Free radicals are unpaired oxygen molecules that can cause damage to the membranes of the cells in our bodies, and this may lead to the development of different types of diseases.

Because free radicals contain an unpaired electron, they have a need to bond with oxygen atoms. The membranes of our cells have lipids that contain oxygen atoms, which are targets for free radicals. The oxygen atoms will be stolen by the free radicals, and this will bring about a chain reaction that will greatly increase the presence of free radicals in the body.

The activity of free radicals in our bodies can cause our cell membranes to deteriorate to the extent that they will fail to function effectively. The cellular membrane is a very important part of the human body, because it facilitates communication between different systems within the body.

Modern scientists have come to the conclusion that the cellular membrane is the true ‘brain’ of the cell, and it has greater effect on our biological beings than any of the other microscopic components of our bodies.

Pollution and synthetic toxins are not the only factors that contribute to the presence of free radicals in our bodies; cellular metabolism and digestion also work together to produce free radicals.

Free radicals can cause a lot of problems to our health. When there is an abundance of free radicals in our bodies, the genetic code material of cells can be changed, and this will result in mutations that can lead to serious conditions such as leukemia and other forms of cancer, as well as many other diseases.

In fact, free radicals are said to be linked to most of the chronic degenerative diseases that are known in the world today.

Therefore, the air we breathe and the foods we consume may have a detrimental effect on our bodies. This is why antioxidants play an important role in eradicating free radicals – free radicals which may cause damage to our nervous system, skin, organs, eyesight, and overall health.

Eradicating cancer is an on-going effort by scientists and researchers. Recent studies have shown antioxidants are effective in helping to combat the free radicals that cause cancer. This is a small but significant development in the larger equation.

Cancer is actually caused by damaged and mutated cells in the body. The agents that cause the damage are known as free radicals, which are unpaired molecules that are constantly trying to steal electrons from oxygen atoms.

Many of these oxygen atoms can be found in the membranes of our cells and, as such, the free radicals will attack our cells to get the electrons they need to perform oxidation.

When the free radicals steal electrons from the oxygen atoms, they will create other free radicals, and this chain reaction will help them multiply in numbers. As the number of free radicals in the body increases, there is a chance that the cells’ genetic code material will be altered, and this will cause the cells to mutate into cancerous cells.

To prevent free radicals from doing damage to the cells in our bodies, we need to consume more foods that have high levels of antioxidants. Antioxidants have been proven to be effective in combating free radicals. They are large molecules that are able to maintain stability even if they are in a free radical form.

When antioxidants get into our bodies, they will function as new targets enabling free radicals to steal electrons. Since the free radicals have other targets from which they can obtain electrons, they will refrain from attacking the cells. Therefore, the chances of cancerous cells developing in our bodies will be reduced.

To obtain the necessary antioxidants to prevent the occurrence of cancer, it is recommended that one consume more fruits and vegetables, which are known to contain high levels of antioxidants.

One serving of fruits and vegetables a day can greatly reduce the chances that the free radicals in the body will attack cells. Thus, antioxidants will help minimize the chances of developing serious diseases.
