We’ve hear a lot in the news about micro diets and how they can help the body. Did you know that adding a few more nutrients to your diet can help your skin to look younger? Let’s learn more about probiotics.

What Are Probiotics?

They are bacteria, but the good kind. They live in the body in the digestive tract, namely the intestines. The intestines play a large role in your health. It is here that food is broken down even further and absorbed through the walls of the intestines to be carried to other parts of the body. It is also here that that undigested red meat they talk about in the news makes its home.

When the intestines aren’t functioning well, the rest of your body will show it. This can mean lackluster hair, brittle nails, and sallow skin. Toxins in the body can come to rest in the intestines and also the liver, a filtering organ. Free radicals are one of these types of toxins that can lead to organ damage and illnesses such as cancer and the like.

Probiotics come from mostly dairy foods like yogurt and fermented soy and grains. You may have heard about bifidus regularis on yogurt commercials, or lactobacillus. They are found as live cultures in dairy and do all sorts of neat and positive things.

For one, probiotics help you digest your food better. Better digestion means a cleaner colon that is devoid of the toxins that can make us sick and look years older. Without diarrhea or constipation, you feel a lot better and less bloated as you go about your day. Probiotics also help manufacture some of the vitamins that we need each day for cellular health: vitamin K (potassium) and the B vitamins – specifically B12.

Benefits of Probiotics

So what can probiotics do to help you look younger? They can boost your immune system. This means you fight disease better. When none of those nasty bad bacteria and viruses can get in, your body can make the most of the antioxidants found in your food to fight aging: clear up your skin, strengthen your nails and nourish hair follicles.

These same bacteria can also help the liver. Naturally, the liver cleanses the blood, removing harmful toxins. When the liver gets overloaded by environmental toxins, stress and poor lifestyle choices, it shows on the skin (liver spots, moles, acne and the like). Probiotics help the liver to do its job more efficiently and clear your skin.

When your body can absorb and use all the nutrients from food, you gain energy. Also, you are less hungry as they can help fight cravings for sugar and fat. That can aid in weight-loss programs.

Probiotic bacteria live in the body in the intestinal tract. They can be overwhelmed by bad bacteria if we are not careful. Ingest as many probiotics as you can to tip the balance of the scale in your favor.

What are superfoods? They are foods that are perfect in the nutrition that they provide to you. One of the best is broccoli. Read on to find out why.

When we are kids we don’t always want to eat our green vegetables. Feeding them to the dog gets them off your plate, but you are missing out on the health benefits. As adults, we often adopt the same treatment of them as we did as kids.

Well, it’s time to look at vegetables as the healthy food that they are. You might have heard mention of superfoods, but do you really know what they can do for you? Today, the superfood of the hour is broccoli.

It looks like a small tree with a thick trunk that happens to be green and not brown. The head is made up of tiny tight projections that form the florets. But beyond the outside lies a powerhouse of health for everyone.

Broccoli is classified as a cruciferous veggie because it is crunchy. The same goes for cauliflower. It smells bad when it is cooking (due to the sulfur compounds it contains), but it tastes good with a little low-fat butter spread and salt.

On the inside, broccoli is working wonders on your body. First of all it is an antioxidant. That means that it fights the damage in your body done by free radicals. Free radicals come from the environment, cigarette smoke, toxins in the air, stress and eating the wrong foods. Over time, they can increase the incidence of cancers and other age-related diseases, and make you act and feel older than your years.

Eating broccoli can help reverse that process before it even begins to be a problem. Here are some of the other benefits of this superfood.

* It contains flavonoids – These are a particular type of antioxidant. In broccoli they help shield you from lung, breast and GI cancers.

* It can preserve your memory – Broccoli contains substances that can help to reduce the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. It inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase from doing its job which is to break down acetylcholine. This is a brain neurotransmitter that is responsible for memory pathways. Eating broccoli performs the same action as some drugs that are given to Alzheimer’s patients to retard that process. Other foods – apples, oranges and even potatoes – also help, but not as much as broccoli.

* It cleans out the liver – The liver is a filtering organ but it can become overwhelmed. Eating broccoli helps to clean out the liver so it can function better.

* Eating broccoli raw or steamed will give you the most nutrients of all. The less amount of processing done, the better. And remember to eat the stalk and the florets.

Want a food that can fight disease, slow the aging process and restore your memory in one single bound? Eat broccoli.

Age is more than a number. It has to do with the way that we feel about ourselves and how our bodies feel about us. One way to fight the aging game is with antioxidants.

What are antioxidants? These substances are found in the body. They come from the foods that we eat. Their main purpose is to combat the effects of free radicals in the body.

Free radicals are by-products of the process known as cellular respiration. As oxygen is metabolized, substances are released that can wreak havoc on the internal systems. This includes wrinkles, cataracts, digestive ailments, arthritis, cancer and more. Free radicals also come from our external environment: pollution, cigarette smoke, stress and the sun.

Antioxidants in their many forms neutralize free radicals. In effect, they prevent them from latching on to our delicate organs.

So, how do we get these antioxidants? There are many sources that you may have already heard about. Think of vitamin A, C and E for beginners. Some minerals like zinc also have antioxidant properties. Many foods contain these vitamins and other vital antioxidants like lycopene, flavonoids, lignans and such.

What does this mean to you? Antioxidants are all around you but you have to know where to look. Antioxidants are even showing up as functional substances. They are being added to foods (juices, milk, sodas etc.) and cosmetic products (skin cream, cleansers and soap). But, they are best in their natural form as food – especially fruit and vegetables.

Boosting your antioxidant levels is a matter of knowing where to find them and incorporating those foods in your daily diet.

* Try a juicer – Juicers have been a big product, especially with fitness and health guru Jack Lalanne. Juicing fruits and vegetables increases their potency and antioxidant value. Also, you get to taste their natural essence instead of when it is covered with sauces and dressings.

* Smoothies – Fruit smoothies are easy to make and can include whatever fruit combination you desire. Use fresh (when available) or frozen fruits. You can make a batch and freeze it. When you are ready, thaw out a cup and have it for breakfast or as a snack when you want something sweet.

* Add vegetables to sauces and casseroles – What better way to slip in a few extra antioxidant-rich foods than by dicing them into soups, sauces and casserole dishes? It works for picky children who need their veggies but don’t want to eat them.

* Plan ahead – We often eat poorly when we are in a hurry. Planning ahead for the next day’s meals so you can reach for foods that will help you fight aging and illness whenever you want something to eat.

Antioxidants are one of the keys to longevity. Adding more of them to your diet can increase your chances of a healthy, good-looking life now and in the future.

Have you ever desired the skin of your youth back again? Well, science has developed a process that says you can restore elasticity and firmness that has been lost to your skin. It is the science of fraxel laser therapy.

As we age, so does our skin. It is constantly bombarded by free radicals just like the internal organs of our body. Free radicals come from environmental sources (pollution, the sun), smoking, stress, food and other places. For the skin, free radical damage means that skin loses its elasticity.

Elasticity is its ability to stay tight and toned. Special fibers in the second layer of skin, the dermis, form a lattice network that strengthens skin. These are two proteins called collagen and elastin. Weaknesses in that network can lead to wrinkles and other conditions like age spots.

Now, no one wants to develop wrinkles. And, we certainly don’t want to look old before our time. Some people will inherit the type of skin that stays tight as they age and others will show signs of wrinkling. It’s the luck of the draw, but now there is fraxel laser therapy to even the odds.

What lasers can do

Lasers are made up of different wavelengths of light that can penetrate the surface of the skin. With fraxel laser therapy, areas of the skin are treated with many columns of laser light. The laser penetrates to the dermal layer of the skin where the protein fibers are forming collagen.

Each laser light makes a tiny wound in the skin. When the skin is wounded, cells rush to the sight of the wound to speed healing. In the event of dermal injury, this means that a new network of collagen and elastin is formed. The result is a tighter look to your skin just as you once had when you were younger.

Fraxel laser therapy is not just for wrinkles. It can be used for other skin conditions. The laser is set to penetrate the skin at the level of the problem like age spots or even acne. Surface problems are targeted and removed, leaving a clearer layer of skin.

Depending on your condition, you may need one treatment or several to return your skin to a smooth and blemish-free look. Fraxel procedures are performed in a doctor’s office by trained professionals. It rejuvenates the skin by speeding healing. Most patients are able to receive their treatments without further wound care.

Fraxel has been deemed safe for use by men and women of all ages. Most skin colors respond well to the treatment, but ask to be sure. Traditionally, ethnic groups with more melanin in their skin have experienced scarring with lasers. This procedure is different and offers a safer approach.

If you are interested in fraxel laser therapy, talk to your skin care professional. They can perform a skin evaluation and explain the possibilities of fraxel being right for you.

Although oxygen is essential for the survival of human beings, it can also be the cause of great damage to our bodies. The oxidation of free radicals can result in the destruction of cell membranes, which can increase the body’s vulnerability to many different kinds of diseases.

One of the most effective ways to neutralize free radicals is to consume foods that are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent free radicals from damaging the cells in our bodies. When antioxidants are introduced into the body, they act as oxidation targets for free radicals. With the presence of these new targets, the free radicals no longer have to steal oxygen atoms from our cell membranes to fulfill their need to oxidize.

Antioxidants are able to give away or accept electrons without doing any harm to our bodies, and they can keep free radicals from destroying our cells to give us optimum health.

Free radicals can contribute to the development of about sixty different types of diseases. While they can cause milder illnesses such the flu and infections, they can also contribute to occurrences of life-threatening health risks such as heart disease and cancer.

Free radicals can also damage the nerve cells of our brains and cause mental health disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Therefore, by controlling the oxidation activities of free radicals, antioxidants are actually performing essential work that can be life-saving. In addition, antioxidants may be effective in slowing down the aging of our cells and bodies.

There are a lot of fruits and vegetables that contain high levels of antioxidants, and these include berries, pink grapefruits, oranges, peaches, apricots, papayas, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, red peppers, tomatoes, and carrots. There are also supplements that you can take to boost the level of antioxidants in your body.

To ensure that the free radicals in your body are under control, include foods that contain antioxidants in your daily diet.

As we all strive to become more health conscious, many have espoused the use of antioxidants as an essential part of their daily diet.

Antioxidants are essential because they are needed by the body to neutralize free radicals and stop them from impairing cells. Free radicals are known to be chemical substances that can cause cell damage. If this happens, it can lead to aging and even disease.

People are continuously searching for the best sources of antioxidants. It is not enough that you regularly take dietary supplements. In fact, there is no need to take several pills every day.

There are no supplements that can offer natural antioxidants; they can only be obtained from the foods we consume. Antioxidants shield cells from unstable molecules known as free radicals. These radicals come from different sources like pollution and smoke from cigarettes.

There are several examples of antioxidants. These includes vitamins C, E, A, beta carotene, and lycopene.

Vegetables contain the most common antioxidant required by our bodies. There are quite a number of vegetables that are well known as natural sources of antioxidants. These include broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, peppers, and others.

These are excellent choices that can benefit the body greatly. Vegetables with rich color are especially good to consume since they have phytonutrients. Green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale are two of the best. There are also vegetables that are rich in beta carotene like carrots and sweet potatoes.

Of course, some fruits provide high levels of antioxidants as well. Examples include berries, kiwi, prunes, watermelons, pomegranates, and apricots. Aside from vegetables and fruits, antioxidants can also be found in tea, most notably black and green tea. Drinking at least a cup every day can be very beneficial for the body.

Consuming fruits and vegetables as part of one’s diet regimen holds an assurance that you are contributing to a healthy lifestyle and, at the same time, helping to rid the body of free radicals which can cause cell damage.

Every day, our bodies are exposed to toxins that are detrimental to our health. Some of these toxins are free radicals.

Free radicals are unpaired oxygen molecules that can cause damage to the membranes of the cells in our bodies, and this may lead to the development of different types of diseases.

Because free radicals contain an unpaired electron, they have a need to bond with oxygen atoms. The membranes of our cells have lipids that contain oxygen atoms, which are targets for free radicals. The oxygen atoms will be stolen by the free radicals, and this will bring about a chain reaction that will greatly increase the presence of free radicals in the body.

The activity of free radicals in our bodies can cause our cell membranes to deteriorate to the extent that they will fail to function effectively. The cellular membrane is a very important part of the human body, because it facilitates communication between different systems within the body.

Modern scientists have come to the conclusion that the cellular membrane is the true ‘brain’ of the cell, and it has greater effect on our biological beings than any of the other microscopic components of our bodies.

Pollution and synthetic toxins are not the only factors that contribute to the presence of free radicals in our bodies; cellular metabolism and digestion also work together to produce free radicals.

Free radicals can cause a lot of problems to our health. When there is an abundance of free radicals in our bodies, the genetic code material of cells can be changed, and this will result in mutations that can lead to serious conditions such as leukemia and other forms of cancer, as well as many other diseases.

In fact, free radicals are said to be linked to most of the chronic degenerative diseases that are known in the world today.

Therefore, the air we breathe and the foods we consume may have a detrimental effect on our bodies. This is why antioxidants play an important role in eradicating free radicals – free radicals which may cause damage to our nervous system, skin, organs, eyesight, and overall health.

Eradicating cancer is an on-going effort by scientists and researchers. Recent studies have shown antioxidants are effective in helping to combat the free radicals that cause cancer. This is a small but significant development in the larger equation.

Cancer is actually caused by damaged and mutated cells in the body. The agents that cause the damage are known as free radicals, which are unpaired molecules that are constantly trying to steal electrons from oxygen atoms.

Many of these oxygen atoms can be found in the membranes of our cells and, as such, the free radicals will attack our cells to get the electrons they need to perform oxidation.

When the free radicals steal electrons from the oxygen atoms, they will create other free radicals, and this chain reaction will help them multiply in numbers. As the number of free radicals in the body increases, there is a chance that the cells’ genetic code material will be altered, and this will cause the cells to mutate into cancerous cells.

To prevent free radicals from doing damage to the cells in our bodies, we need to consume more foods that have high levels of antioxidants. Antioxidants have been proven to be effective in combating free radicals. They are large molecules that are able to maintain stability even if they are in a free radical form.

When antioxidants get into our bodies, they will function as new targets enabling free radicals to steal electrons. Since the free radicals have other targets from which they can obtain electrons, they will refrain from attacking the cells. Therefore, the chances of cancerous cells developing in our bodies will be reduced.

To obtain the necessary antioxidants to prevent the occurrence of cancer, it is recommended that one consume more fruits and vegetables, which are known to contain high levels of antioxidants.

One serving of fruits and vegetables a day can greatly reduce the chances that the free radicals in the body will attack cells. Thus, antioxidants will help minimize the chances of developing serious diseases.
