How Important Are Cancer Support Groups?
When an individual is diagnosed with cancer, they go through a series of emotions. These include shock, then denial, anger, pain, and fear – not to mention the stress involved. While some may keep their feelings to themselves for a long period of time, others need to express these emotions by talking with a friend or family member.
These discussions may help, but no one can really know what the person is going through unless they have been or are going through it themselves. This is where cancer support groups play a vital role.
Having the ability to talk to others who are experiencing the same symptoms, emotions, and outrage can have a life-changing effect on the person involved.
A cancer support group can offer you the opportunity to talk honestly and openly about cancer. It makes you feel that you are not completely alone and lets you share ways in which you can cope with the disease, as well as discuss the latest information on treatments or studies.
There are cancer support groups in which a particular type of cancer is discussed as well as support groups that offer comfort to family members whose loved one has been affected.
There are online support groups as well for those who feel more comfortable chatting online than in person, or who cannot meet at certain times, or who prefer a medium in which there is no time limit to the discussion.
There is something inherently cathartic about discussing your feelings with someone who understands what you are going through. While it’s true that family members will offer as much love and support as they can muster, it is often the community of cancer support groups who will ultimately offer the kind of understanding and non-judgmental support that is needed.
One can use this analogy: If you are having emotional problems, you may talk to a friend about it and it might ease the pain in the short term. But it is the psychologist who will offer you an unbiased assessment in order to arrive at the fundamental reason why these problems occur.
The same holds true with support groups. They offer a cancer patient an open forum to talk, rant and rave, or simply give that individual the space to listen until he or she is ready to talk about their issues.
Support groups have had a major impact on individuals who, regardless of their situation, know there is one place they can go and be themselves. Individuals who have cancer can feel safe and at ease knowing that they are part of a group of people who understand and can assist them at each stage, from their initial diagnosis to recovery.
