Biological-Based Therapies Explained

0

Biological-based therapies are an alternative method whereby vitamins, minerals, and herbs are used to treat a particular illness or disease.

One of the well-known therapies in this field is Priobiotics. An example of this therapy can be found in the use of dairy products such as yogurt. By definition, priobiotics is a good bacterium found in the stomach and intestines. By consuming foods that contain these bacteria, we are adding to as well as insulating the bacteria that already exist.

Priobiotics can help the immune system, decrease allergies, and reduce risk of heart disease and other known diseases.

Biological-based therapies are also used in cancer treatments by working in conjunction with the immune system. While there is no empirical evidence to definitively assert this claim, there are doctors who state that this therapy may slow down cancer cells as well as reduce cancer cells from spreading.

A study was done to ascertain the effect of biological-based therapy on cardiovascular disease. It was found that among these patients, 94 used such biological-based therapies such as vitamin C, multivitamins, calcium, vitamin B complex, fish oil, C-Q10, glucosamine, magnesium, and vitamin D. These patients felt that using these products were safer and more effective than prescription drugs.

The results concluded that although patients used these drugs, there was a risk of drug interaction. Moreover, it was also found that 98% of these patients were highly educated about the use and effects of these biological therapies.

Many doctors today promote the use of glucosamine combined with vitamin D, for example to alleviate joint pain. Another product mentioned in the study was C-Q10. This is a supplement that reduces muscle pain and promotes the reduction of cholesterol.

We know for a fact that consumption of fish can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, but that fish oil may pose significant problems for individuals who take these supplements.

Although some types of biological-based therapies may offer an alternative to the more traditional prescription drugs, it is always a good idea to check with your doctor to ascertain if there is any risk of drug interaction.
